Son Ye Jin says she hasn’t yet had the chance to hear what her husband Hyun Bin thought of her new film No Other Choice, despite his attendance at the VIP premiere.
In her interview on September 23rd, the actress explained that a packed evening of premiere events and an after-party kept them from discussing the movie in detail. “I got home late last night and didn’t get a chance to talk about it,” she said with a laugh. “I’m planning to ask him today.”
At the premiere after-party, Son noted the enthusiastic turnout. “My friends never say anything bad, but honestly, if the film was so-so they wouldn’t have joined me for round two. The fact that so many people came means the movie must have landed well,” she said.
No Other Choice, directed by Park Chan Wook, follows Man Soo (Lee Byung Hun), an office worker who thought his life was complete until he’s suddenly laid off. To protect his wife, their children, and their hard-won home, he prepares for a personal war to find reemployment. Son plays the wife Mi Ri, who sets aside her hobbies of dance and tennis to step into the workforce after her husband’s dismissal.
Son also spoke about her early impressions of the film. Earlier during the Busan International Film Festival event, she shared that while she and Hyun Bin rarely talk about work, she did share this script with him.
“When I first got the script from Director Park, it seemed like a peaceful family story, so I was suspicious,” she said, smiling. “But then, of course, those Park Chan Wook touches appeared—contradictory, ironic, with a streak of black comedy. The narrative has a tragic framework but also these comedic elements, which made it feel strange and fascinating. I told him, ‘You should take a look at this.’”
No Other Choice opens in Korean theaters on September 24th.
