What began as lighthearted banter at a press event has turned into an unexpected storm for Son Ye Jin.
On August 5th, chatter about the actress’s “personality” began dominating the internet after a clip from the production conference for Park Chan Wook’s upcoming film No Other Choice went viral.
During the event, Son Ye Jin reflected on her first project since becoming a mother, explaining, “This was my first role after giving birth, and that experience helped me. Before becoming a mom, I played many roles, but having the real experience made it feel completely different this time. The maternal instinct plays a major role.”
But it was co-star Lee Byung Hun’s joking aside that set tongues wagging. While Son was speaking, Lee leaned over to Park Chan Wook with a smile he couldn’t hide. Son shot back, “What are you whispering about?” prompting Lee to reply with a story from the set.
“The child actress who played our daughter asks a lot of questions,” Lee said. “I always tried to answer her, but Son never did. When I asked her to respond, she told me, ‘You handle it.’ Hearing her now, I see that she cherished the girl in her heart.”
The room erupted in laughter, and Son laughed along, but the clip was soon reframed online as proof of her “cold” behavior. Gossip-focused social media accounts and community boards amplified the snippet, with waves of negative comments piling in.
Amid the growing noise, the mother of the child actress in question, Choi So Yul, took to social media to clarify. “It was a funny behind-the-scenes story told in jest. We also felt a bit taken aback by how it spread, but the fact is, she was very kind,” she wrote. She even shared a personal anecdote: “Son Ye Jin gave my daughter a rare Aurora Ping doll—something even Santa couldn’t find. It was the best Christmas gift ever.”
