Koo Hye Sun is speaking out again after facing backlash over pointed remarks about her ex-husband, Ahn Jae Hyun. Early on August 9th, around 5 AM, the actress updated her original post to address criticism labeling her as guilty of “double standards”—or, as the Korean phrase puts it, “If I do it, it’s romance; if others do it, it’s an affair.”
In her revised statement, Koo added a final note: “P.S. This post concerns matters that arose after the divorce settlement with my former spouse. I regret that some reports are blurring the issue by linking this to conflicts that took place before the settlement.”
Her initial post, shared the day before, began, “Despite how badly our divorce ended, indirect and repeated references that clearly point to me—especially under the guise of jokes—are cowardly.” She went on to explain, “We reached an agreement that didn’t pursue the question of who was right or wrong. And while it may not have been a true reconciliation, our silence could be seen as an unspoken promise—and, at the very least, a basic act of human decency.”
Koo further criticized Ahn, saying, “Even if it’s said for laughs, if the person involved is hurt by it, it should stop. No one has the right to use me as material for entertainment.” She added, “I hope my ex moves forward with his own identity—not using me as a storyline.”
The remarks were widely interpreted as aimed at both Ahn and the media. Recently, Ahn appeared on the KBS show Heart on Wheels hosted by Lee Min Jung, where he admitted, “Being alone feels really lonely,” prompting Lee to wish him well in finding someone new. He also made indirect references to his divorce on YouTube appearances in K.Will and Jo Hyunah’s channels.
Critics, however, pointed out that Koo herself has spoken publicly about the divorce on programs such as KBS’s Park Won Sook’s Live Together. This sparked accusations of hypocrisy, which Koo countered by saying her recent comments referred to events after the settlement, not before, and that media reports failing to make that distinction were misleading.
Koo Hye Sun is currently active in various fields, including her hair roller business and film directing. Ahn Jae Hyun continues to work in television dramas and variety shows.
