aespa’s Karina has spoken out about her political controversy, breaking her silence one month after the 21st presidential election.
On July 6th, Karina appeared on the YouTube channel “Fairy Jaehyung” and addressed the backlash, saying, “There was absolutely no political intention behind it. I just felt I needed to say something. I’m so sorry for causing concern to our fans and everyone else.”
She explained that while out with her staff, she had bought the jacket on a chilly day. “It was cold, so I grabbed something to wear. I posted the photo to engage with fans, then I got a message and deleted it. I realize now—I was just really ignorant. Even if I was overseas, that’s no excuse. I should’ve known better.”
The incident stems from a May 27th Instagram post in which Karina was seen walking the streets of Japan wearing a red jacket printed with the number 2—a color and symbol widely associated with a particular party. With the election just one week away, fans began speculating about political intent.
Looking back, Karina said, “It made me realize—I really need to be more aware and educate myself. I was ignorant, and I admit that. Since I’m the one who sparked all this, I know I have to take responsibility. But it was especially painful seeing my members affected, too.”
She went on to reflect on her personal growth through the experience. “I have two dreams,” she said. “First is just to live a peaceful life. With everything that’s happened recently, I found myself wishing the same for the people around me, too.”
“My second dream,” she added, “is to live a long life as Yoo Ji Min—not just Karina the celebrity. I love being Karina, but I also want to live long as Yoo Ji Min, my parents’ daughter. If Karina is like an alter ego, I want to live more solidly and enjoyably as Yoo Ji Min.”
