South Korean Court has ruled that NewJeans members must pay 1 billion won (around $730,000 USD) each if they pursue any solo activities without their agency, ADOR.
On May 30th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Division 52 approved ADOR’s request for what’s called an “indirect compulsory order.” This means that if the members go forward with independent promotions without the agency’s permission, they will be fined 1 billion won per person. If all five members were to promote together without ADOR, the total penalty would reach 5 billion won (approximately $3.65 million USD).
This ruling makes it virtually impossible for NewJeans to carry out any activities outside of ADOR’s approval, at least for now.
The court explained that the amount was decided based on the potential harm to ADOR if the contract is violated, the benefit NewJeans could gain from going solo and the seriousness of breaking their current obligations.
NewJeans is expected to appear at the second hearing for the ongoing lawsuit filed by ADOR over the validity of their exclusive contract on June 5th. The group has recently strengthened their legal team by bringing on former judges and prosecutors.
