Legendary Supporting Actor Choi Jung Woo of ‘The Tale of Lady Ok’ Passes Away at 68

Choi Jung Woo, known for his memorable roles in The Tale of Lady Ok and countless other works, has passed away unexpectedly at 68.

The actor died on the morning of May 27th, according to his agency, Bless ENT. While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, it’s been reported that he had long battled a chronic illness.

Choi began his acting career on stage in 1975 and transitioned to screen work in the mid-1990s, building an impressive resume of over 100 film and television credits. He became a familiar face through standout supporting roles, whether playing the comic relief, a reliable elder, or a chilling villain. His filmography includes notable titles such as Two Cops, Another Public Enemy 2, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Chaser, The Front Line, Deranged and The Witch.

On the small screen, he lent depth and presence to dramas like Yeon Gaesomun, Brilliant Legacy, 49 Days, the Quiz of God series, Deep Rooted Tree, Seoyoung, My Daughter, Master’s Sun, Yi San, the Wind of the Palace and Curtain Call.

Even in 2023, Choi remained active, appearing in films such as The Childe, Ransomed and The Moon, as well as the dramas Call It Love and Stealer: The Treasure Keeper. His final project is expected to be the upcoming KBS2 drama Glorious Days (litertal translation), set to air in July.

News of his sudden passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes online. Fans wrote, “I didn’t know his name, but I instantly recognized his face. My heart goes out to his family, “One of those faces you just know,” and “He felt so familiar, like someone you’ve known forever. This feels personal.”

A funeral service will be held at Room 5 of Kimpo Woori Hospital Funeral Hall, with the procession scheduled for 10 AM on the 29th. He will be laid to rest at Suwon Yeonhwa Cemetery.
