Ryu Jun Yeol is still in awe after learning that none other than Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón offered praise for his performance.
In a press interview held on March 26th for the Netflix psychological thriller Revelations, Ryu shared how deeply moved he was by Cuarón’s response. “It means the world to me,” he said. “Back when I was in school, Alfonso Cuarón was everything to me. Just knowing he watched my work is enough.”
Revelations, directed by Yeon Sang Ho and executive produced by Alfonso Cuarón, follows a pastor (Ryu Jun Yeol) who believes punishing the culprit in a missing persons case is divine will, and the haunted detective (Shin Hyun Bin) tormented by visions of her dead sister.
He went on to reveal that someone had recently shared a conversation they had with Cuarón, and that there’s even a comment video from the director. “I don’t know if it’s been released yet, but I don’t plan on watching it. I’m too worried—if it’s good, I’ll get sweaty and embarrassed,” he said with a laugh. “But sometimes, when I think about the compliment while walking, it makes me smile. Preparing a new project can be hard, and moments like that really keep me going.”
Asked how his family reacted to working with the Hollywood recognition, Ryu chuckled and said, “My parents actually don’t know who Alfonso Cuarón is. My dad’s over 70, and my mom said she had a hard time following the movie.”
On playing a pastor with an almost fanatical belief in divine justice, Ryu said he hasn’t heard feedback from the church community just yet—”Some pastors I know have seen it, but they haven’t commented. I’m a little nervous,” he shared.
To prepare for the role, Ryu consulted real pastors for authenticity. “I didn’t just follow the script. I explained each scene in detail and reworked the prayers based on their guidance,” he explained. “At one point, I even asked a pastor to record his own voice so I could study the tone, and it sounded deeply sincere and captivating.”
