It looks like we’ll be seeing Son Ye Jin a lot on international red carpets this year.

The teaser poster for director Park Chan Wook’s film No Other Choice has been unveiled. Beneath the greenery, actors Lee Byung Hun and Son Ye Jin clasp hands as if dancing. Son Ye Jin described the screenplay as “crazy” in more ways than one. “Lee Byung Hun’s character Mansu is a role any actor would dream of, regardless of gender. It’s deeply layered and explores the full spectrum of emotions. My character Miri is Mansu’s wife, but her role isn’t that big. Still, the screenplay was overwhelmingly compelling, and my trust in the director was strong—that’s why I chose to do it.”

To Son Ye Jin, Park Chan Wook’s cinematic world is defined by its “unsettling beauty.” “His style is unique and exotic, yet it never loses its elegance and grace. His characters might seem strange at first, making you wonder, ‘Why are they like that?’ But before you know it, you’re drawn in. He’s an artist. This film, with its cinematography, dialogues and storytelling, makes the audience naturally place themselves in the characters’ shoes—‘What if I were Mansu?’ ‘What if I were Miri?’ In a way, this might be his most accessible work yet.

Park Chan Wook and director Lee Kyoung Mi worked on the screenplay for 17 years. Son Ye Jin previously collaborated with Lee Kyoung Mi in the 2016 movie The Truth Beneath, where she played Yeon Hong. Yeon Hong’s enigmatic nature and mysterious intentions added to the film’s suspense. Son Ye Jin felt this role was a turning point in her career, opening doors to more diverse opportunities.

Son Ye Jin says she feels most alive when she’s working. In the past, she was strict with herself, setting high standards for success and pushing even harder if a film didn’t do well. But now, she takes a more relaxed approach, allowing her to connect more deeply with her craft. “Before, I felt like I was sprinting through back-to-back 100-meter races. Now, I want to pace myself like running a marathon.”

She once spoke about entering the “second chapter” of her acting career. “Before, I had specific genres I wanted to tackle—thrillers, for example. But now, if the project is great, I want to take it on with courage even if my role is small.”

Outside of work, she has started writing a new bucket list—watching the sunset on an African safari with her family, camping on a snowy day and living in a remote place for ten days. She would note them down on her phone whenever they come to mind. “I love traveling, and I want to expand my horizons at least once in my life. These things may seem small but feel grand, or seem grand but are actually quite doable if I set my mind to them. I haven’t accomplished any of them yet, but opening this second chapter and checking them off one by one—it’s exciting, isn’t it?”
