Squid Game 2 breakout star Jo Yu Ri is setting the record straight about those eye-popping salary rumors. During a recent interview, the actress addressed speculation about her alleged 4.2 billion KRW ($2.9 million) paycheck for the Netflix megahit.
“When I first saw rumors that I was paid 4.2 billion won, I burst out laughing,” Jo Yu Ri shared. “I took it lightheartedly at first, but I was surprised to see some people actually believed it. While I can’t discuss the exact figure, 4.2 billion is an amount I’ve never even imagined, let alone seen.”
Jo plays Jun Hee in the highly anticipated sequel, a character who enters the deadly competition after losing a fortune due to misleading investment advice from her ex-boyfriend Myung Ki (Yim Si Wan). Already being hailed as the next Jung Ho Yeon and the season’s biggest breakthrough, Jo remains humble about her rising stardom. “I’m just grateful for all the attention, seeing the comments and likes increase on my Instagram posts with each update,” she said.
The role marked a turning point for the actress. “It came during one of the most challenging periods of my life,” Jo revealed. “Getting this recognition and the fact that they trusted me with this role makes me incredibly happy. It feels like my burnout has disappeared, and I’ve found new motivation.”

A former member of K-pop group IZ*ONE through the survival show Produce 48, Jo’s transition to acting proved seamless. Her experience with competition shows came in handy during the audition process. “I think I’m more comfortable being evaluated than others,” she explained. “I searched for the most gloomy outfit in my closet, made my hair look unkempt, even cutting it roughly at home, and added slight dark circles under my eyes.”
The global response has left Jo in awe. “This is my first time doing global promotions and press activities, and I was shocked by the international fans’ enthusiasm,” she shared. “Seeing diverse fans enjoying the games while wearing the tracksuits was an unforgettable moment. That’s when it hit me that it truly is a beloved series and that I’m part of something huge.'”
