SBS and Netflix have joined forces. South Korea’s major broadcasting company and global streaming giant signed a strategic partnership agreement at the SBS Broadcasting Center in Mokdong, Seoul.

Under the partnership, Netflix will provide SBS’s new and existing dramas, variety shows and educational programs to its domestic subscribers. Additionally, some of SBS’s new dramas will be released simultaneously worldwide on Netflix. Starting next year, Netflix subscribers will be able to enjoy popular SBS shows like Running Man, Unanswered Questions, Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail and Kick a Goal, as well as classic hits such as Sandglass, Hot Stove League and the Penthouse series.

Furthermore, the two companies will be co-releasing some of SBS’s new dramas worldwide in the second half of next year. Netflix will localize these works with subtitles and dubbing in various languages and actively promote them through localized marketing campaigns to increase the global reach of K-content.

SBS has been working to expand the global reach of K-content, leveraging its experience in producing content that appeals to both domestic and international audiences. Following examples like the BBC’s partnership with Netflix to enhance its global presence, SBS appears to be taking strategic steps to broaden its influence in the global media market.

At the signing ceremony, Netflix Korea VP Kang Dong Han stated, “This collaboration between SBS and Netflix sets a new milestone in promoting the excellence of Korean storytelling worldwide. We hope that SBS’s innovative vision and Netflix’s passion for Korea will create a new golden age for K-content that will last for more than a hundred years.”

SBS President Bang Moon Shin remarked, “This agreement is based on SBS’s future strategy of ‘going global beyond terrestrial TV.’ Through our partnership with Netflix, we expect more global viewers to access K-content, thereby contributing to the globalization of K-content. This partnership will create new opportunities for both SBS and Netflix,” emphasizing that the agreement will help expand the viewer base.
