A Chinese fashion designer has accused BLACKPINK member Lisa of wearing a copy of her original design in her recent music video for “Rockstar.”
According to a report by the South China Morning Post on the 29th, Yang Yue, a designer from Beijing who operates a fashion brand in London, took to social media to claim that Lisa wore a top in the “Rockstar” MV that copied her star-shaped design.
In the newly released music video, Lisa showcases her dance moves through the vibrant streets of Bangkok, Thailand, wearing a striking leather star-shaped top. Yang posted a screengrab of the music video, criticizing the outfit: “Not only did they copy it, the cut is also awful. It’s exhausting. Stylist, please stop embarrassing yourself.”
Yang explained that she created the design in 2020 while studying for her master’s at the University of the Arts London. She claimed that the star symbolizes Beijing, and the rugged design reflects the spirit of rock. To support her accusation, she shared photos documenting the design process.
The designer also alleged that many K-pop artists have worn copied versions of her designs. She further acknowledged that only aespa’s Ningning officially borrowed her designs through proper channels. Yang mentioned her efforts to secure design copyrights over the years but noted the significant cost and effort, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite attempting to contact Lisa’s stylist, Yang received no response. She mentioned that on the 27th, Lisa’s agency sent an email resembling an apology, stating that the outfit was simply chosen because “star shape is her favorite. The email concluded, “You can be assured this will not happen again in the future. We sincerely apologize.”
Some fans criticized Yang Yue for singling out Lisa, accusing her of not raising issues when other celebrities wore similar designs.
Meanwhile, Lisa has left her former agency YG Entertainment and established her own company, LLOUD. She has since signed a new partnership with RCA Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music, indicating her plans for extensive global activities.
