Hwang Jung Eum has been sued for defamation by a woman she mistakenly identified as her husband’s affair.
On the 22nd, Seoul’s Nowon Police Station confirmed that the plaintiff, identified as A, filed a defamation complaint against Hwang Jung Eum on the 20th. According to reports, the settlement agreement presented by Hwang’s side omitted an acknowledgment that Hwang had defamed and insulted A, instead including a clause that doubled the settlement amount if A breached the agreement.
A’s representation claimed that Hwang’s team reduced the original settlement amount by half and proposed paying it in two installments. They stated, “We can’t tell if Hwang Jung Eum is genuinely remorseful. She treated A like a shameless person after money, so we demanded the original settlement amount. Unable to bear it any longer, we filed the complaint.”
Conversely, Hwang’s representatives asserted, “Right before the final agreement, A’s side suddenly demanded double the initially agreed amount. Hwang Jung Eum acknowledges her mistakes and is sincerely trying to resolve the issue.”
Earlier this year, Hwang Jung Eum announced her divorce. In April, she posted A’s photos and Instagram account, accusing her of being her husband’s mistress. Her posts included remarks like, “Hey ugly, please marry Yeong Do” and “Thoughts like that make you covet someone else’s husband.”
These posts quickly spread online, but A countered, stating that a friend of hers shares the same name as Hwang’s husband. A demanded a correction and public apology, claiming she had been bombarded with hate comments because of the actress’ post.
Despite Hwang issuing two apologies, issues during the settlement led to the defamation lawsuit.
Hwang Jung Eum married a non-celebrity businessman and former pro golfer in 2016. The couple briefly separated in 2020 but reconciled, only to face another split three years later. They are currently in divorce mediation.
