Following the hit drama Queen of Tears, the new series The Midnight Romance in Hagwon has launched with an encouraging viewership of 5.2%. This new Ahn Pan Seok’s romance series appears to have once again captured the audience’s attention.
On May 11th, tvN kicked off its latest weekend drama, which is set against the backdrop of the academy hub of Daechi-dong. The show features a story of complex and engaging midnight romance between a star tutor and her once-student-now-colleague. With Ahn’s previous successes like Something in the Rain and One Spring Night, expectations were high even before the series aired.
The first episode of The Midnight Romance in Hagwon scored an average national rating of 5.2%, peaking at 6.4%, making it the number one show in its time slot. The subsequent episode maintained its lead with ratings of 5.2% and a peak at 5.6%.
In episodes one and two, the narrative unfolds around star academy instructor Seo Hye Jin (Jung Ryeo Won) and her proud protégé Lee Jun Ho (Wi Ha Jun). The show explores their transition from a teacher-student relationship to colleagues after Jun Ho leaves a corporate job to audition successfully for a new instructor position at her academy. Despite Hye Jin’s attempts to dissuade him, Jun Ho provocatively suggests, “Call me teacher.”
>> Wi Ha Jun Says He Gets Butterflies Around Jung Ryeo Won: “She’s so pretty”
The setting of a rain-drenched academy district in Daechi-dong, a cozy restaurant, and a home with deep brown furniture provide a visually rich and emotive backdrop. The chemistry between the two actors is also fresh and appealing. Jung Ryeo Won skillfully portrays the multifaceted Seo Hye Jin, from her toughness as a professional to her vulnerability around a long-time student, while Wi Ha Jun enhances the charm of an unrestrained and playful younger man.
