ELLE Korea has unveiled a new look at JTBC’s upcoming drama, The Atypical Family, featuring actors Jang Ki Yong and Chun Woo Hee. The series marks Jang’s first project since his military discharge and Chun’s return to the fantasy romance genre.
In The Atypical Family, Jang plays a man who has lost his superpowers, and Chun portrays a mysterious woman who appears before him. Their on-screen chemistry was highlighted in a recent photo shoot, where they posed with an apple between them, evoking the intimacy of a kiss, and donned contrasting black and white outfits that enhanced their charismatic presence.
Jang Ki Yong shared his feelings about returning to acting post-military, “It’s a mix of anticipation, worry, and curiosity. Watching dramas I participated in with my fellow soldiers was a strange experience. I’m looking forward to how it will feel this time around.”
Chun Woo Hee spoke about the unique aspects of the series, emphasizing that the superpowers in the drama serve as a metaphor rather than pure fantasy. “The idea of a superhero family losing their powers could be a reflection of everyone’s untapped potential. I hope it offers comfort and healing to those who feel unable to fully utilize their abilities in modern society,” she explained.
When asked about what’s essential for acting in romance, Chun Woo Hee highlighted the importance of real-life experience. “While fantasy plays a role, realism is also crucial in romance. I generally don’t agree that more life experience always helps with acting, but when it comes to romance, it definitely does require a significant amount of sensitivity,” she stated. Jang Ki Yong added, “I tend to express more through actions than words. This makes it difficult for me to show affection openly, and it’s definitely a challenge when acting. Overcoming this is something I’m working on.”
The Atypical Family is premiering on JTBC on May 4th at 10:30 PM KST.
