The beloved musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, known for stirring up box office success every season since its first performance in Korea in 2005, is set to return for its 14th season. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, aka Hedwig, tells the story of a transgender singer from East Germany who overcomes past wounds and seeks a new life through music.
Created by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig first debuted in a small rock club in Manhattan, New York, in 1994. It moved to off-Broadway in 1998, continuing its sell-out streak before finally making its way to Broadway’s Belasco Theatre in 2014, where it won Tony Awards and Drama Desk Award.
This season promises to offer a more immersive and enriching experience by actively utilizing stage setups, video elements, and live broadcasting during performances. It anticipates an interactive stage between the stage and the spectators, which were previously restricted due to the pandemic.
The role of the protagonist, Hedwig, will be portrayed by Jo Jung Suk, Yoo Yeon Seok, and Jeon Dong Seok. Jo Jung Suk returns to the role after eight years, Yoo Yeon Seok after seven years, and Jeon Dong Seok after five years.
Jo Jung Suk expressed his excitement: “I once said I’d still be doing ‘Hedwig’ even after turning forty, and I’m glad to keep that promise. I’ve been part of four seasons since 2006, and each time, it’s been exciting and still sets my heart on fire. I’m thrilled and will prepare diligently to present a great show.” Yoo Yeon Seok added, “Returning to ‘Hedwig’ after a long time, I aim to bring a more mature and multifaceted version of the character. Please look forward to it and show your support.”
The musical Hedwig will be performed at the Charlotte Theater from March 22nd to June 23rd.
