The recent plagiarism controversy surrounding is suspected to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish her reputation.
On May 11th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul reported that an anonymous individual had filed plagiarism charges against IU. This accusation stirred further controversy as it resurfaced previous allegations that the singer had, with her 2013 release “The Red Shoes,” which bears similarities to “Here’s Us” by the German band Nekta.
A music communicator, who initially raised plagiarism claims against Yoo Hee Yeol, stated that the accuser’s intention is to tarnish IU’s reputation by seeking out similarities between her songs and those of other artists. This suggests a lack of musical understanding on the part of the accuser. The communicator emphasized, “That’s why their claims have not gained public support over the past year. Merely using references is not considered plagiarism. The issue arises when references are used almost identically to the original work, which becomes problematic. Having similar chord progressions and rhymes is acceptable.”
The communicator further asserted, “To believe that IU intentionally conspired with all six composers to plagiarize for personal gain is highly unlikely. The more people involved, the greater the risk of exposure, making such a scenario less plausible.”
Additionally, many are criticizing the accuser for solely blaming the singer and not holding the composers accountable.
