Seungri, convicted of causing the “Burning Sun Scandal,” admitted to his criminal charges during the appeal hearing. And the military court reduced the singer’s sentence by half in the final appeals trial.

On January 27th, the High Court for Armed Forces sentenced the former Big Bang member to a reduced sentence of one year and 6 months in prison during the appeals trial. This is strikingly reduced compared to the original ruling made in August last year, which was three years in prison with a fine of 1.15 billion KRW (about $984,800).

This ruling seems to have been influenced by Seungri’s change of heart. Originally, the singer had been denying all charges except for violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act since his first hearing. However, he abruptly admitted to all nine charges and apologized at the appeals court.

If both Seungri and the military prosecutors do not appeal, Seungri will be released from prison after serving another year and one month. He has been housed in the military Correctional institution, aka the military prison.

Meanwhile, these are nine charges Seungri admitted to habitual illegal gambling; solicitation of prostitution; assistance in the solicitation of prostitution; violation of sexual crime laws through the spread of illegal sexual content via SNS; breach of business finance regulations; violation of food sanitation laws; embezzlement; illegal foreign monetary transactions; violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act; and abetting assault.
