Kwak Shi Yang said goodbye to his latest drama, Alice.
In a round interview, Kwak Shi Yang described Alice as a work that will remain a big part of his heart for the next few years.
“I think Alice became an ignition point for me. It’s a work that extended my dream as an actor, so I think it’ll take up a big part of my heart.”
Alice, which ended on October 24, tells a magical time-traveling story of a woman who resembles the man’s dead mother and a man who lost his emotions. In it, Kwak Shi Yang took on the role of Yoo Min Hyuk, the team leader of the time travel system Alice’s guide team.
For Kwak Shi Yang, who is cheerful and outgoing, it wasn’t easy to play Yoo Min Hyuk, who has a thorough and taciturn personality.
“Min Hyuk never smiles in the play. I’m honest and enjoy delightful things, but Min Hyuk is responsible and has so many things to protect. I think these conflicting parts gave me a bit of trouble.”
He was able to immerse himself in character thanks to fellow actors, Kim Hee Sun and Joo Won.
“I am really grateful to Hee Sun and Joo Won. When they act, they really go deep, and that helped me to bring out Min Hyuk naturally.”
Kwak Shi Yang also talked about what it was like working with them.
“Hee Sun was the mood-maker at the scene. She would show up and everyone rejoiced. I’ve rarely been this comfortable with my seniors during filming. I was kind of scared at first, but she wasn’t like that. She treated me like her real brother, gave me a birthday present, and I was touched by her details.”
“Joo Won is the same age as I am, and he is just full of charms. He called me ‘dad’ at the scene (laughs). Maybe it’s because I played Joo Won’s father in the drama, but I got attached to him. This was the first time working with him, but I felt like I was working with an old friend who knows what to do without talking about them out loud.”
The actor said that he is the kind of person who blames himself and is strict with himself.
“Whenever I’m working on a project, the thoughts of wanting to do better and properly pulling my weight are big. I also worry a lot, so I’m really stressed. Being perfect is good, too, but I think about earning people’s recognition. Because if I don’t, that means I won’t be able to survive in this industry. I try to put my everything in because I think I can work for a long time only if I get recognized by the public.”
Kwak Shi Yang, who entered the seventh year of his debut this year, visited the small screen every year without a break.
“I’m a hard worker. I tend to think of myself as someone who needs more work in what I do, so I try to be faithful. I think that’s why people have a high opinion of me. It hasn’t been a long time since I debuted, but seeing how people recognize me makes me think that I was very lucky to have come this far so fast.”
