Today, MMA 2020 held its award ceremony. But it seems like netizens are not entirely agreeing with the result.
In the first half of this year, ZICO’s “Any Song” became the hottest topic. More than 100,000 videos related to the “Any Song” challenge were uploaded on TikTok, and one of them exceeded 16 million views (based on KOZ Entertainment in January). With this fantastic success, numerous K-pop artists started their own challenges, making “dance challenge” one of the music industry’s favorite promotion techniques.
Not only did the song top the monthly charts on various music charts in February, it landed at No. 1 on Goan’s First Half Music Chart. According to Melon, “Any Song” was the most loved song for Kakao Talk’s profile music, beating BTS’s “Dynamite.”
YouTube also announced that the music video for the song landed at No. 2 on YouTube’s Top 10 Most Popular Music Video in Korea This Year. The 2020 Genie Music Awards, which was replaced with the year-end announcement in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, chose “Any Song” as the Song of the Year.
However, ZICO was only given the Top 10 Artists Award along with 9 other artists at the MMA 2020. Not to mention the Song of the Year Award, Rap/Hip-Hop Award was also given to another artist/group, DAMOIM. Most netizens are not complaining about the Song of the Year as “Dynamite” also made significant footmarks in K-pop history. However, many are questioning the fact that the Rap/Hip-Hop Award was not given to ZICO.
Here are some of the comments: “ZICO joined the army and the award disappeared.” “Cannot believe ZICO didn’t win the hip-hop award.” “Who the hell is DAMOIM?” “This is one of the reasons why I don’t watch MMA.” “Cannot believe ZICO basically didn’t win an award.”
