Woo Do Hwan opened up about the emotional challenge of portraying a terminally ill character in Netflix’s upcoming series Mr. Plankton. On the morning of October 4th, a press conference for the series was held at Hotel Naru Seoul M Gallery in Seoul, featuring director Hong Jong Chan and stars Woo Do Hwan, Lee Yoo Mi, Oh Jung Se and more.
Describing his character Hae Jo, Woo Do Hwan said, “The phrase ‘born by mistake’ really fits him. No one wanted him to be born, and he grew up feeling like he was something that should be erased or forgotten. Because of that betrayal and lack of love from his family, he has this deep sense of emptiness and can’t form attachments. He just drifts around like a plankton, doing only what he finds amusing, like a wanderer.”
Hae Jo’s journey becomes even more intense when he discovers he has a tumor in his head, leaving him with only a limited time to live. Reflecting on the character’s struggles, Woo admitted, “I thought about how to portray the mindset of someone facing death, and it was really tough. Spending months immersed in those thoughts was the hardest part. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be this difficult.”
Mr. Plankton follows Hae Jo (Woo Do Hwan), a man mistakenly brought into the world, as he sets out on his final journey. Along the way, he’s joined by the world’s unluckiest woman, Jae Mi (Lee Yoo Mi), in a romantic comedy full of unexpected twists. The series will be available exclusively on Netflix starting November 8th.
