Netflix has announced that Aema will premiere on August 22nd and unveiled a teaser poster and trailer.
Aema is a Netflix original series that follows top star Hee Ran and rising newcomer Ju Ae as they confront the harsh realities hidden behind the glitz and glamor of Korea’s booming erotic film industry in the 1980s. The show marks the first series directed by Believer’s Lee Hae Young and stars Lee Ha Nee, Bang Hyo Rin, Jin Seon Kyu and Cho Hyun Chul.
The teaser poster features Hee Ran (Lee Ha Nee), the era’s reigning superstar, alongside a bold newcomer, Ju Ae (Bang Hyo Rin). They are standing in front of a theater marquee promoting Madam Aema, the sensational hit that defined the decade.
The teaser trailer pulls back the curtain on the glamorous but gritty world of 1980s Korean cinema, following four characters caught up in the making of Madam Aema. Beloved actress Hee Ran is shocked by a script filled with lines like “breasts” and threatens to walk away, but her contract forces her to stay on the project.
To punish her, film executive Gu Joong Ho (Jin Seon Kyu) bumps her down to a supporting role named “Erica.” He and rookie director Gwak In Woo (Jo Hyun Chul) begin holding auditions to recast the lead, eventually discovering the bold and magnetic Ju Ae. Tension builds when Ju Ae begs, “Please make me Jung Hee Ran,” and the veteran actress coolly replies, “Interesting.”
The trailer teases a rocky production ahead, highlighting tensions between the seasoned Hee Ran and the untested Ju Ae, as well as clashing visions between the film’s producer and director.
Aema premieres exclusively on Netflix on August 22nd.
