Park Bo Gum is opening up about the response to When Life Gives You Tangerines, the Netflix original series that features him with IU in a sweeping multi-decade romance.
In a recent interview on IU‘s official YouTube channel, the two stars who share chemistry in the hit series got together for a candid conversation about the show that has viewers emotional.
IU kicked things off by asking, “How far have you watched?” adding, “I watched up to episode 13 last night and cried my eyes out. I woke up this morning with puffy eyes. The storylines now focus on Ae Soon and Gwan Sik as older adults, but seeing scenes I hadn’t watched before really brought me to tears.”
Park Bo Gum expressed his satisfaction with the production: “I felt this way during filming too, but you did an amazing job and our sunbae actors grounded the whole thing. Every single character feels alive, which I found both gratifying and impressive.”
IU noted, “We haven’t seen everything, since we needed to stay in our younger Ae Soon and Gwan Sik mindset. But the older versions of our characters are incredible. And in episode 13, our younger selves keep appearing in flashbacks. It’s like they and the older Ae Soon and Gwak Sik are just one person.”
Addressing the buzz from fans hoping to see more of the younger versions, Park Bo Gum shared, “People have been congratulating me while saying they wish there were more scenes of my buzz-cut days and Ae Soon’s bob-cut era,” referring to their earlier timeline. “After those early parts, we immediately become parents to Geum Myeong, so I understand wanting to see more of that transition. But I’m also curious about Gwan Sik and Ae Soon as parents. I keep telling friends, ‘We appear bit by bit throughout, so please keep watching until the end.'”
IU chimed in, “Exactly. Our younger Ae Soon and Gwan Sik scenes appear throughout as the story goes back and forth. The way the show’s structured is unique—it even starts with older Ae Soon in episode 1. For anyone feeling a little let down, just know we’re still around all the way through. So hang in there with us.”
When Life Gives You Tangerines is currently streaming on Netflix.
