Song Joong Ki starrer Bogota: City of the Lost—or simply Bogota—has dropped on Netflix on February 3rd, following its theatrical release on December 31st, potentially offering the film a fresh chance at finding its audience.
The movie, largely filmed on location in Bogota, Colombia, follows the story of Guk Hee (Song Joong Ki), a young Korean immigrant who arrives in South America in 1997 following his father’s business failure. The narrative traces his arduous journey as he becomes involved with the local Korean merchants’ association, showcasing his survival and growth against the exotic backdrop.
Song Joong Ki delivers a dramatic transformation as Guk Hee, portraying the character’s evolution from a naive teenager to a powerful figure in his 30s who gains control of the Korean community. The film, directed by Kim Seong Je of The Unfair, also features compelling performances from Lee Hee Joon and Kwon Hae Hyo.
Despite its production value, Bogota has struggled at the box office, attracting only 420,000 viewers as of January 30th. The film faced stiff competition from contemporaneous releases like Harbin and Firefighters. The Netflix release strategy aims to provide the film with a broader audience and a chance at critical reassessment.
