Squid Game Season 2 came out only yesterday but fans waited with bated breath to binge through the highly anticipated return of the Netflix phenomenon.
Warning – Spoilers Ahead
Now, within 24 hours, the series is trending at #1 on Netflix, was remarkably well received and director Hwang Dong Hyuk dropped some input regarding the season’s in-depth storyline and characters that concluded with the finale’s impactful death scene between Jung Bae, Gi Hun and the Front Man.
Fans were stunned to see Gi Hun losing his best friend at the hands of the Front Man and it is obviously the biggest loss in the series. Whether fans realized it or not, the death was revealed to be a well-executed plot device that brings closure to Gi Hun’s current story arc while furthering his mission into the now-confirmed Season 3.
The director stated in an interview with Vanity, “When I first wrote season 2 and season 3, it was one long story. I originally planned to write this story in about 8-9 episodes, but after finishing the story, it ended up being over 10 episodes, so I thought it was too long to fit in one season. So I wanted to finish it in the next season and have enough points to move on to the third season.”
Hwang further explained the obsession our favorite lead Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) has over the games. His drive to end it all drives him further into the game leading to his constant failure and demise mentally, emotionally and physically.
“When you look at Gi Hun’s story, all of his attempts that he puts in to stop the game: the first one being getting these mercenaries and trying to plant a tracking device, that goes to fail; the second attempt of trying to persuade people to vote so that they can leave the game, that goes to fail as well; and then the third and last attempt of bringing people together and causing the rebellion, it also all goes to fail.”
As both seasons were filmed simultaneously, the confirmation of Season 3 absolutely left fans elated. Perhaps it was worth the three-year wait? If you’re curious about what to expect, Hwang further elaborated saying, “I think we will announce the release date of Season 3 right after Season 2 is released. I expect it will be around summer or fall next year.” He added, “In Season 3, you will meet the hero at a very important crossroads. He will not be the same person who appeared in Season 2.”
If you’re deeply curious about what season three has to offer, fans can have a taste of what’s to come by watching the ending credits of season two’s final episode. Director Hwang was critical of avoiding spoilers but being sure to tease fans just enough to leave them on edge and hooked to the story that was three years in the making.
When asked about his favorite scenes and season overall, Hwang replied, “I’d say the pentathlon. Not only was it the most challenging to shoot, but I think after we had finished filming it, I enjoyed watching it myself the most. And especially so because within one round of games, you get five smaller games. And as in Season 1, I wanted to showcase these actual children’s games that Korean people grew up playing, especially the ones that I grew up playing myself.” His ability to include realistic aspects of himself into the series is what truly makes it a worthwhile ride and captivating story to experience.
