Former LABOUM member Yulhee has opened up for the first time about why she gave up custody of her three children following her divorce from FT Island’s Choi Min Hwan.
During the October 22nd episode of TV Chosun’s All By Myself, Yulhee reflected on the sudden nature of her divorce. “I didn’t feel the divorce coming, so it was a huge shock for me,” she confessed. “From the moment I found out, it felt like I was in my own personal hell.”
Looking back at her married days of wanting a big, happy family, she recalled, “I was always happy when I was with the kids.”
According to Yulhee, it was Choi Min Hwan who brought up of divorce first. “When the word ‘divorce’ first came into my life, I thought we should try to overcome it for the sake of the kids,” she explained. “But by that time, the rift between us was too deep, and we both realized this was the right decision for each other.”
Yulhee also addressed the criticism she faced from some netizens for giving up custody of her children. “It wasn’t a matter of whether I would raise them or not,” she said. “I was just so worried about the emotional scars this might leave on the kids.” She added tearfully, “What parent wouldn’t want to be with their own children? That decision was the hardest thing I’ve ever done—no words can describe it.”
Yulhee explained that she only wanted to ensure her three kids had financial stability. “The reality was that their father’s situation was better, both financially and practically,” she said. “Before I left, I took photos of the kids while crying, wondering if I had made the right choice, because I felt like I couldn’t live without them.”
Despite the pain, Yulhee emphasized that she maintains a good relationship with Choi Min Hwan and regularly sees the children. “I don’t have any regrets,” she said. “I’ll work hard and live well so that one day, when the time comes, I can be a prepared mother who will welcome them with open arms.”
Yulhee and Choi Min Hwan married in 2018 and have a son and twin daughters. The couple divorced last year, with Min Hwan gaining custody of their children.
