Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars and Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 have both taken the platform by storm, not just in Korea but globally, securing the top two spots in Netflix’s global rankings.
According to Netflix’s Top 10 website, Culinary Class Wars garnered an impressive 4 million views between September 30th and October 6th, topping the charts in 18 countries, including Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. The show has held the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s global non-English TV rankings for three consecutive weeks, a first for a Korean variety show.
Culinary Class Wars showcases a high-stakes battle between “Black Spoon” chefs—underdog culinary masters—and the country’s top “White Spoon” star chefs. In the explosive episodes 11 and 12, the competition culminated in an intense final showdown with top eight contenders such as Choi Hyun Seok, Triple Star (Kang Seung Won), and Edward Lee battling it out in the kitchen.
The final decision came down to judges Paik Jong Won and Ahn Sung Jae, who delivered a unanimous verdict. The winning chef tearfully remarked, “I’ve achieved my dream. It turns out dedicating my life to the kitchen wasn’t a mistake after all.” Napoli Matfia, whose real name is Kwon Sung Jun, won the ‘Culinary Class Wars’ title and a ₩300 million prize (roughly $223,000 USD). The runner-up, Edward Lee, was praised for his creativity and for reconnecting with his Korean heritage throughout the competition.
