The criticism surrounding SBS investigative journalism program Unanswered Questions, which dealt with the FIFTY FIFTY situation, is still underway.
The recent episode of SBS’s Unanswered Questions covered the ongoing legal battle between FIFTY FIFTY and their agency ATTRAKT.
The anticipation was palpable as the show announced that family members of FIFTY FIFTY would appear to unveil the reason for the lawsuit, dissecting the truth surrounding their exclusive contract dispute and the structural problems of the K-pop industry. However, after the broadcast, online communities were flooded with disappointment and criticism regarding the episode. A response that’s largely resonated is, “Trust has utterly crumbled; even their previous broadcasts are now suspect.”
Although the legal dispute between FIFTY FIFTY, ATTRAKT, and The Givers is the point at issue, Unanswered Questions hurriedly packaged the girls as victims, focusing on the hardships they faced during their trainee days and estimated music revenue based on publicly available information.
The fact that it is still unclear who the victim is and to what extent, which is the core of the FIFTY FIFTY situation, did not stop Unanswered Questions from hastily setting the girls as victims and producing the broadcast solely from that perspective.
Views left comments such as, “I couldn’t believe what I was watching when I saw the host reading the members’ hand-written letter to the crew,,” “The problem started with hiring a business professor to calculate music revenue,” and “‘Unanswered Questions’ consistently stumbles on entertainment-related topics.”
These viewer grievances were also reflected on the program’s official website. The viewer board is now filled with criticism such as “You didn’t even cross-check what the parents, fans, and the so-called whistleblower said,” “It was only hearsay,” and “Disappointed in biased broadcasting.”
