Han Hyo Joo has been fined nearly $50,000 after a tax audit revealed that she had underreported her taxes.

AJU Economy’s report revealed that Han Hyo Joo failed to report her taxes during a 2022 investigation, resulting in a fine of 60-70 million won ($47,000-$55,000).

The star’s fine follows a similar case involving Lee Byung Hun, another BH Entertainment actor, who was fined in September 2022. In 2020, the National Tax Service investigated stars who purchased properties under personal companies, including Kim Tae Hee, Lee Byung Hun, and Kwon Sang Woo.

In the case of the actress, she purchased a building in Seoul’s Eunpyeong district in 2018 under a corporation, with her father as the representative. However, no evidence was found to suggest that an actual business was being operated at the property. Additionally, she bought a building in Seoul’s Hannam neighborhood in 2017 for 5.50 billion won ($4.3 million) and sold it in 2021 for 8 billion won ($6.2 million), making a profit of 2.50 billion won ($1.9 million).

BH Entertainment attributed the discrepancies to differing accounting methods and emphasized that the underreporting was unintentional.

The agency stated, “Han Hyo Joo’s tax investigation was a routine procedure conducted without any special circumstances. It was unrelated to any illicit activities and solely stemmed from differences in the interpretation of personal expense management.”

Notably, Han Hyo Joo was recognized as a model taxpayer in 2011 and served as an ambassador for the National Tax Service.
