The upcoming Netflix movie Unlocked held the production conference on the 15th, which Director Kim Tae Jun, Im Si Wan, Chun Woo Hee, and Kim Hee Won attended.
Unlocked is about a woman’s life that’s been turned upside-down when a dangerous man gets a hold of her lost cell phone and uses it to track her every move. Director Kim Tae Jun shared, “Smartphones, which are with us 24 hours a day, are in some ways the ones who know me better than anyone else. This thriller lets you indirectly experience the worst situation that can happen when that smartphone is exposed to an evil man.”
Im Si Wan plays Joon Young, who plants a hacking program in Na Mi’s smartphone for his crime. Director Kim talked about casting Im Si Wan for the villain role, “When I imagine a villain, I often imagine a weapon becoming a person. When I imagined what it would be like if a modern smartphone became a person, Im Si Wan was the first to come to mind.”
The actor introduced Joon Young as someone who picks up other people’s smartphones and steals their identity. “He does this as his hobby,” he commented. “(When I was acting) I excluded serious emotions and approached the role with a playful mind. Rather than working hard to harm others, it’s like I’m playing on top of their heads as if I’m joking.”
Chun Woo Hee becomes Na Mi, an ordinary office worker whose life starts to change after losing her phone. “I wanted to show a universal image of an office worker through the scenes of her working in the office. But after she loses her phone which was like a part of her soul, I wanted her to look like a defenseless victim.”
Kim Hee Won takes on the role of Ji Man, a detective who chases after the murderer. “In fact, losing a smartphone is one of the most trivial things, but I felt how such a trivial act could become such a problem.”
Lastly, Im Si Wan shared, “Smartphones are not only used in certain countries. The reality is that each person owns at least one smartphone. We depend on them so much, so I think a lot of people can connect with the story.”
Meanwhile, Unlocked will be released on the 17th.
