The 27th Busan International Film Festival presents ‘Discovering New Japanese Cinema,’ a Special Program in Focus that will screen selections from 10 new Japanese directors. This year’s Special Program in Focus will introduce films by ten aspiring Japanese directors. The program will include films directed by Miyake Sho, dubbed the ‘Kelly Reichardt of Japan’ by director Hamaguchi Ryusuke, Nohara Tadashi, who wrote the screenplays for Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s Happy Hour (2015) and Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s Wife of a Spy (2020).
The selections include films by Kawawada Emma, who worked as Kore-eda Hirokazu’s assistant director, and Katayama Shinzo, former assistant director of director Bong Joon Ho and who was invited to the competition section of the 26th Busan International Film Festival for his film Missing (2021).
The program also showcases films by directors who have been invited and awarded by prestigious film festivals all over the world. ‘Discovering New Japanese Cinema’ will highlight the work of ten directors, including Kiyohara Yui, Kusano Natsuka, Fujimoto Akio, Harumoto Yujiro, Sugita Kyoshi, and Igarashi Kohei.
The 27th Busan International Film Festival will be held for ten days from October 5th to October 14th at the Busan Cinema Center.
