In the final episode, Dan Hwal (Lee Jin Wook) kills himself to end the curse that he had started. The heartbreaking yet beautiful ending of the fantasy drama touched many hearts of its viewers.
The show begins with a flashback of 1000 years ago when Dan Hwal and Min Sang Woon (Kwon Nara) were the only pair of immortal beings on earth. Dan Hwal endeared Sang Woon, but she got into danger due to the humans she tried to help. Outraged, he had killed everyone and this creates a tragic bond of karma which later returns when the victims reincarnate into his family members. Realizing what he had done in the past, Dan Hwal agonizes and slowly grasps that revenge only leads to tragedy. So to end this mad cycle, he plunges his sword into the chests of Ok Eul Tae (Lee Joon) and himself.
As Dan Hwal seeks forgiveness of his past through death, Sang Woon makes a teary promise to find him in his next life. She also dies, as she was severely injured in the fight with Ok Eul Tae. Meanwhile, Min Si Ho (Gong Seung Yeon) and Nam Do Yoon (Kim Woo Seok) survive and eventually get married. 50 years later, Dan Hwal and Sang Woon miraculously meet in their old house. Although they don’t recognize each other, their reunion implies a start of a new relationship between the two.
