Lee Jung Jae opened up about his humble beginnings and family life.

On January 12th, the actor guest appeared on the 137th episode of tvN’s You Quiz On The Block. While he was talking about his role Sung Ki Hoon in Squid Game, the star revealed that what drives him as an actor is the desire to play a character that he hasn’t played before.

Lee Jung Jae then shared some of his childhood stories, revealing that he was brought up in a rather poor family. He said, “As an actor, I have always been tagged with a reputation for having a very luxurious lifestyle. However, I grew up in a small studio apartment that looks quite smaller to Sung Ki Hoon’s house in Squid Game. At least Ki Hoon had two rooms, but my house had no rooms at all. We used to gather around our tiny dinner table in this small house about the size of a living room.”

Additionally, Lee Jung Jae shared that his character is actually based off of his real childhood memories. “The filming site of Squid Game reminded me of my childhood and my mother at that time. So, I walked along the street all day, whenever I had time. Looking back my childhood around the filming site actually helped me a lot to become Sung Ki Hoon.”
