Netflix has confirmed the production of Yeon Sang Ho’s new film Jung Yi (working title). For the project, Kang Soo Yeon, Kim Hyun Joo, and Ryu Kyung Soo were cast as the lead actors.
Director Yeon Sang Ho has wowed the world with his novel ideas in Train to Busan, Peninsula, and the upcoming Netflix series Hellbound. This time, he’ll be back as director and writer of Jung Yi.
Jung Yi is set in the 22nd century, where it is no longer possible to live on Earth due to climate change. When a civil war breaks out in a shelter made by the remaining mankind, people try to replicate the brain of a legendary mercenary Jung Yi in a robot. As an SF film, Jung Yi will center around brain cloning and humanoid combat robots.
Kang Soo Yeon plays Seo Hyun, a research institute team leader that develops brain cloning and AI technologies. She’s in charge of cloning Jung Yi’s brain and testing the robots’ combat skills. Kim Hyun Joo will turn into Jung Yi, the elite leader of the allied forces. For the role, Kim will pull off dynamic action sequences and complex emotional performance.
Lastly, Ryu Kyung Soo takes on the role of Sang Hoon, the head of the research institute. He must successfully clone Jung Yi’s brain into a humanoid combat robot for the victory of the allied forces.
In particular, Kim and Ryu made headlines by reuniting with director Yeon right after the Netflix series Hellbound.
