The Venice Film Festival appointed director Bong as the chairman of the jury for its 78th festival on the 15th (local time). To this, Bong Joon Ho responded, “The Venice International Film Festival is a film festival that has a long and diverse history. It is an honor to be able to continue this cinematic tradition.”

The director said, “As the chairman of the judging committee, and more importantly, as a long-time cinephile, I am ready to praise and applaud the great works in the film festival. I’m filled with genuine hopes and excitement.”

“The first good news for the 78th Venice Film Festival is that director Bong Joon Ho has enthusiastically agreed to head the jury,” said Alberto Barbera, the art director of the festival. “This admirable Korean director is one of those who voice the most authentic and original voices in the world. We are very grateful that he decided to serve the festival with his passion as a delicate, curious, and unbiased cinephile.”

He added, “This is the first time in history that a Korean director has been chosen as a judge, demonstrating that the Venice International Film Festival is accepting films from all over the world and that directors from all countries can consider Venice as their second home.”

Along with Cannes and Berlin, the Venice Film Festival is considered one of the world’s top three film festivals. Unlike the Cannes International Film Festival which was canceled due to the COVID-19 situation, this event will be held, though in a minimized way.

Meanwhile, the 78th Venice International Film Festival will be held from September 1st to 11th,
