In the recent TV show, former fencer Nam Hyun Hee explained that she was given a suspension for having done double eyelid surgery, drawing keen attention.

In the recent episode of E Channel’s Playful Sister (literal title), which aired on Sept. 22, Nam Hyun Hee, a former foil fencer who won the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics, mentioned the controversy over her double eyelid surgery in 2005. She said, “I was handed a two-year suspension for doing double eyelid surgery. And later, it was reduced to six months.”

Recalling that it was a time when the double eyelid surgery went viral among the female players, Nam said that she got a long break after she won the gold medal in the team event at the world championship. She decided to get the surgery during her break, and the surgery was conducted with permission. However, some criticized her for “caring more about her looks than her sport,” and she was eventually handed a suspension.

Other athletes who listened to the story were all surprised, and Nam added, “But I couldn’t say anything or protest because I thought I might humiliate the fencing industry.”

Netizens also showed their reactions to the unreasonable decision, saying, “That was a ridiculous decision,” “How can that be a reason for suspension?” “I remember that. It was a time like that,” and “They still suspended her after she explained everything?”
