[Weekly Up & Down] ‘Peninsula’ Becomes the Welcome Rain in Theaters vs. A Train of Revelations

There is no sign of an end to the controversy over celebrities’ power abuse, which has recently turned the entertainment industry upside down. And yet, despite many issues, pleasing news is still coming. We look back at the entertainment industry issues that have been on the rise last week.

Song Hye Kyo, along with Professor Seo Kyung Duk, donated guidebooks produced in Korean and English to Korean National Association located in Los Angeles. This donation is the second of its kind this year, following the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Chongqing, as part of the “Refilling the Guidebooks in Historic Sites Associated with Independence Movement Project.” With Professor Seo Kyung Duk, Song Hye Kyo has consistently donated Korean language guidebooks, signs written in Korean, art pieces of independent fighters to 22 sites around the world over the past nine years.

 

Peninsula Becomes the New Box Office Hit

Peninsula topped the box office, attracting 1.8 million viewers in the first week. In addition, it continues to top the box office in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, from the opening day all the way to the weekend. In Vietnam (scheduled to be released on July 24), Peninsula has surpassed the pre-booking of Parasite, drawing attention.

Shin Hyun Joon dropped out of the show The Return of Superman only after one episode. Not only did Shin Hyun Joon’s former manager exposed the actor’s power abuse over 13 years, he even raised suspicions about the illegal administration of propofol 10 years ago. On the other hand, Kim Seo Hyung demanded the termination of her exclusive contract from her agency Madi Pictures, sparking controversy. After the end of SKY Castle, she joined hands with her close friend, Jeon Sung Hee, the head of Madi Pictures, but is having a falling out in only 8 months. Kim Seo Hyung is at odds with the agency’s failure to maintain the trust, whereas Madi Pictures is finding fault with the actor’s alleged abuse of power.

 

Summer Vacation Embroiled in Controversy over Plagiarising Japanese Game

New entertainment show, Summer Vacation, which first aired on July 27, has been embroiled in a controversy over adding Japanese features within the show. The house the members are living in is reminiscent of a Japanese house, and the structure of the story, including the mission, is similar to Sony’s game “My Summer Vacation.” In response, the production team apologized, saying, “We fell sorry that we didn’t carefully consider the discomfort viewers might feel.“ However, they denied the allegation of plagiarism, saying, ”We didn’t know the game and didn’t refer to it at all.“

Davichi’s Kang Min Kyung has been embroiled in a product placement controversy. She was heavily criticized as the products she introduced as the products she bought on her own and used personally in her channel were actually turned out to be the result of expensive product placement. Later, Kang Min Kyung posted a message of apology on her Instagram, “I felt I was lacking and inexperienced in taking various processes and procedures as I went overboard with the joy of trying something by myself from beginning to end.”
