Hallyu Stars Kim Soo Hyun and Ji Chang Wook Return with Romantic Comedy Dramas

Kim Soo Hyun and Ji Chang Wook are making their comeback to romantic comedy dramas. Attention is focusing on whether the two Hallyu stars will live up to their names at a time when people are complaining that there are no dramas to watch.

The main reason why expectations are rising rapidly for the two lies with the fact that Lee Min Ho, who returned with a blockbuster drama, is receiving negative reviews. After being discharged from the military, Lee Min Ho returned to the small screen with The King: Eternal Monarch. But he was embroiled in controversy over his performances that have not changed even a little bit from his previous works, and the viewership is only half of what was expected. As Lee Min Ho is not performing well, Kim Soo Hyun and Ji Chang Wook, top Hallyu stars, are now bearing heavy responsibilities. People are expecting them to show more mature performances and come out with results that match their name values.

Kim Soo Hyun, who has solid acting prowess and impressive star quality, chose It’s Okay to Not Be Okay as his first comeback work after being discharged from the army. It is a romantic comedy drama about love between a psych ward guardian who refuses love and a fairytale writer who doesn’t know love.

After saying that he was instantly attracted to the title, Kim Soo Hyun added, “Kang Tae looks fine, but in fact, he is always tired of all that he has to carry. I thought that there will be someone just like Kang Tae somewhere.”

In the drama, Kang Tae lives without any dreams or hopes, taking care of his older brother, who suffers from ASD at home and protecting heartbroken patients at work. Yet, he never looks after himself.

Kim Soo Hyun said, “Moon Kang Tae doesn’t share his innermost feelings with anyone. Especially, in front of his brother, who understands emotions with facial expression, he never shows his thoughts. I hope that you can sympathize with such parts.”

Ji Chang Wook, who has been active in various genres, returns with a friendly drama featuring a convenience store. Backstreet Rookie is an unpredictable romantic comedy drama about a sloppy, handsome store manager and an eccentric part-timer.

Ji Chang Wook will work with Kim Yoo Jung as he plays the role of Choi Dae Hyun, a convenience store manager who seems cold but with warm and pure hearts. After saying that he was drawn to work because of director Lee Myung Woo, best known for The Fiery Priest, Ji Chang Wook added that “Dae Hyun is an icon of honesty and sincerity.” He also said, “He is very innocent and honest in both work and love. Though he might seem a bit frustrated since he is indecisive, he still has a cute charm.”

Kim Soo Hyun’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay will air on June 20, while Ji Chang Wook’s Backstreet Rookie will premiere in June as the follow-up of The King: Eternal Monarch.
