What better on a hot summer’s day than a hilarious comedy movie with show-stopping action scenes? <The Pirates> is a movie with scenic backdrops of beautiful mountains and the sea, carried by spots of comedy and exciting combat scenes by star actors Son Ye-jin and Kim Nam-gil. The story begins on the eve of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. A whale swallows the Ming Emperor’s Seal of State being brought to Joseon by Chinese envoys. With a big reward for whoever brings back the royal seal, a group of mountain bandits led by Jang Sa-jung go out to sea to hunt down the whale. Jang Sa-jung however runs into a female pirate captain, Yeo-wol, which ensues into an unexpected adventure.
This cartoon-like story of <The Pirates>, was surprisingly inspired by a true story. In the early days of the Joseon Dynasty the seal of Goryeo was returned to the Ming Dynasty, and the seal was not received and missing for 10 years until 1403. This movie’s interesting twist on history makes the story that much more entertaining. To make the movie as realistic as possible two giant pirate ships, 32 meters long each, were crafted to partner the brilliant swordsmanship and top-notch wire action. If you’re looking for a lighthearted historical comedy and action flick we definitely recommend giving <The Pirates> a try!
